Real ID documents in Florida: what to bring to the HSMV

Updated October 2026

What Real ID is

A Real ID is a driver's license or state ID that meets a federal security standard. You need it to fly domestically or enter federal facilities after the enforcement date — the deadline has been pushed back repeatedly; check the TSA / DHS site for the current one.

What to bring

DHS publishes a list of accepted documents for Real ID that all states use. You typically need:

At the office

  1. Bring originals — copies or printouts are not accepted.
  2. The clerk will scan and return each document; you do not leave them behind.
  3. Pay the Real ID fee (often the same as a regular license renewal, sometimes slightly higher).
  4. Your new card arrives by mail; a temporary paper license is usually issued immediately.

Real ID vs. Enhanced ID

An Enhanced ID is a separate product that also lets you cross the US-Canada or US-Mexico land border by car. It costs more and is only available in some states. You do not need Enhanced if you have a passport.

For the current DHS-mandated list of accepted documents and any state-specific extras, see the HSMV website: https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/driver-license-exams/.
